Our recital on Sunday, January 20, 2019 was our biggest recital yet! We had approximately 130 student performers and 10 teacher performers at the Hacienda Heights Community Center. We enjoyed hearing the students' classical and classic rock music selections.
Thank you to the students and teachers/staff for their hard work preparing for the recital. And a huge THANK YOU TO THE PARENTS for being a great audience to make this a wonderful experience for our young musicians.
Some enhancements included ensuring the stage was less cluttered and the popular red carpet. View more photos: Opus 2019 Recital Album.

To celebrate the 5 year anniversary of our school, we are excited to announce that Opus Music School's 2019 summer recital will be our first in a professional concert hall. The venue for our 1st Opus Summer Tour will be...
Colburn School's Thayer Hall in Downtown Los Angeles!
Sunday, July 28, 2019
The Colburn School is one of the top performing arts schools located across the street from the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles. Thayer Hall (pictured here) is a professional concert hall facility with a 9 foot Steinway concert grand piano and will be an exclusive opportunity for our music students.
Registration will be on a first-come first-serve basis, and will begin on Sunday, March 17, 2019 at 8:00 AM. The fee is $80 per performer, which includes a professional photo session on stage and an audience ticket. Limited spots are available, so registration will close once all of the spots are taken and a waiting list will form.
The Opus Summer Tour takes the place of our summer recital and our goal is to visit a new venue every summer. It will allow students to gain performance experience in world-class concert hall venues, and provide your child and family a musical memory to cherish.
Any student of Opus Music School at any age and level can participate, as long as there is no additional equipment needed. Since the venue is not able to accommodate all instruments, Opus drum students or students who require microphones or amplifiers are instead eligible to participate in our exciting Open Mic Night that will be held in August (see below)!
For more information, please go to www.opusmusicschool.com/summer.
On Monday, August 19, 2019, we will be hosting an Open Mic Night, where select Opus students will be able to perform in a cafe-type setting. The event will be held at I Heart Boba cafe in Rowland Heights. This is a great performance opportunity for our drum, guitar, and voice students or those who perform in the pop, rock, or singer/songwriter styles.
Any Opus student is eligible but spots are limited. Sign ups will begin in April. More info will be provided soon!
Our 100 day practice challenge is currently in progress! We hope you are enjoying this challenge! Students have until June 1 to complete it. Who will make it to 100?
As a reminder, here are the rules:
1. Each day that you practice, color one circle in on your practice chart! When you reach 50 or 100 days, you will receive prizes!
2. You have from 2/1/19 to 6/1/19 to complete the practice challenge. Days do not have to be consecutive. There are 120 days in this period, so budget carefully to reach the goal! Practice does not have to be a specific period of time.
3. If you do not have access to your instrument on a day, listening to the music and fingering along is acceptable.
4. After 50 days, show your practice sheet to the Opus front desk to collect a mini prize. After 100 days, you will receive another prize and be invited to a special Ice Cream and & Boba party at I Heart Boba!
We hope as many of our students can reach 100, so keep practicing!

Opus' voice/piano teacher Ms. Sarabeth has a performance coming up!
Ms. Sarabeth will be performing with San Diego Opera in their production of Carmen by George Bizet at the San Diego Civic Center on March 30, April 2nd, April 5th, and April 7th. She will be singing in the chorus. Ms. Sarabeth has been singing opera for 8 years, but only started really focusing fully on opera when she went to school in 2012.
Ms. Sarabeth says "I love opera because it shows the capabilities of the human voice. Projecting over an orchestra and having to be heard in a 3,000 seat house, requires optimal breath support, extreme care of the voice, and knowledge of how the voice works with proper resonance."
Good luck on your performance Ms. Sarabeth!
In 2013, I had a good career in finance, with a steady paycheck and great benefits. Things were pretty good but I wasn’t happy. I always wanted to do something in music but was afraid to quit my stable job, so spent years unfulfilled in my career. The unknown was scary and I’d rather be safe than take the risk.
In 2014, my husband urged me to follow my dream and I quit my job as a CPA to start teaching piano in my hometown of Hacienda Heights. Opus started with 1 piano student in a very small 350sf studio on Hacienda Blvd (pictured here). Very shortly thereafter, I knew Opus was going to be something great because my student enrollment grew rapidly and within 1 year of quitting my job, I had reached 100 students.
Fast forward to January 2019, I was invited to be a guest lecturer at Biola University to speak to an undergraduate Piano Pedagogy class about how Opus Music School was started. My presentation was titled "How I Started by Music School Business and Got 100 Students in My First Year". Speaking to this class reminded me of the incredible journey this has been.
It hasn’t all been easy but I worked hard and was lucky to have a great team helping me. And it has been one of the best decisions I've ever made.
I'm thrilled that you are part of this journey with me and my team. THANK YOU.
Very truly yours,
Mrs. Theresa Cheng
