August 2019 Opus Music School Newsletter

August 26, 2019

New Group Music Classes

Our newest class is our Mini Pop Stars Class with a unique curriculum for 5-7 year olds that was created and written by Mrs. Theresa and Mr. Daniel at Opus Music School. Each student in the class will rotate among each of the following instruments:
1. Piano
2. Guitar
3. Drums
4. Voice

Real pop songs by artists such as Katy Perry and Charlie Puth are simplified for this age group.

This is a great introduction to music for children to expose them to various musical instruments in a fun setting. Students will learn to read basic music notation and play on real acoustic instruments in this class once a week. Students will perform in a real concert every several months.

No instrument purchase or at-home practicing required.

For more info, go to www.opusmusicschool.com/group.

Now that our new group music room is complete, we will be adding new class offerings over the next few months! Check out some of our upcoming group music classes:

New Practice Challenge Starts 9/1

Get ready for our 2nd practice challenge of the year! From 9/9/19 to 11/3/19, we will hold our new challenge, but it'll be different than the 100 Day Practice Challenge we held earlier this year. This time, it will involve...TEAMWORK!

All students will be on a team. Your team will be your lesson day. For example, if you take lessons at Opus Music School on Monday, you will be on "Team Monday." Log the number of minutes you practice each week onto our Practice Challenge sheet and turn in one new sheet each week.

The more minutes you practice, the more you will help your team!

Track how your team does on the Leaderboard that will be posted in the lobby of our music school.

The winning team will receive a Dessert Day at Opus Music School in November.

Congratulations Colburn Performers

Congratulations to all of our student performers at our recent Opus Summer Tour concert at Colburn School in Downtown Los Angeles on Sunday, July 28. It was a lovely afternoon with our student and teacher performers playing on a professional concert hall stage with a 9 foot Steinway grand piano.

All of our students also received a personalized scroll from the County of Los Angeles signed by Janice Hahn, Chair of the Supervisors of LA County.

Stay tuned for our 2020 destination! Hint: It will be a travel opportunity!

We Passed 250 Students!

At the beginning of 2019, Opus Music School had about 200 students. At the start of the year, Opus owner Mrs. Theresa and Director of Operations Mrs. Laura set a goal to reach 250 students by the end of the year.

Every week Ms. Johnalyne kept track of updating our Student Count Board with our current student count.  Progress seemed slow, but it was steady. Then, as of August 14, 2019, Opus Music School officially surpassed 250 students! This was more than 3 months ahead of plan!

Our student growth was driven mainly through two areas:
1) New student enrollment - Our office staff attends monthly customer service and sales training to help the onboarding process for new students.
2) Student retention - Thanks to our great teachers who are able to retain students, this has kept our student count up.

To thank our office staff and teachers, Opus celebrated with a Staff Appreciation Lunch on two days in August. We appreciate our students and families for your continued support of our programs. We'll keep striving to provide a great music learning experience at Opus Music School!

Boba and Open Mic Night

Check out pictures from our first Open Mic Night on August 19! It was held at I Heart Boba Cafe in Rowland Heights. Students played the piano, guitar, drums, or sang while receiving drinks and waffle desserts for them and their guests sponsored by I Heart Boba. We had a blast!

Welcome Ms. Mariel!

Name: Mariel Greenwood
Instruments: Piano, Voice
Available: Fridays, Sundays soon

Ms. Mariel began singing and studying piano at a young age in Sydney, Australia. After attending performing arts high school she moved to New York City to complete a degree in Vocal Performance from the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music.

Upon completion of her degree, Ms. Mariel taught at Youth Music Project in Portland, where she taught private and group lessons in piano and voice. She instructed private lessons to all ages and skill levels, and led classes of multiple skill levels in vocal performance, songwriting, piano, musical theater, and Glee Club.

While still in Australia, she began her performance career including performance with Opera Australia at the Sydney Opera House. Since coming to the US, Ms. Mariel has done vocal work for songs which have appeared on major national TV programs and on national ad campaigns, as well as pursuing her own projects.

As an instructor, Ms. Mariel has been teaching students of all backgrounds, skill levels, and interests both voice and piano. She enjoys helping these students to discover their innate love of music and to develop the tools to express themselves. Read more about Ms. Mariel here.

August Student of the Month

Student Name: Caleb Bacca

Age: 5 years old

Instrument: Piano and Voice

Teacher's Name: Mr. Daniel

School Name and Grade: St. Mark's / 1st grade

1. What do you like the most about taking music lessons at Opus Music School?
I love how Opus Music School teaches me so much about how to make beautiful music. I also love how everyone at Opus Music School is so kind.

2. What do you like the most about your teacher?
Mr. Daniel is so kind, an amazing musician, a great teacher, and he really cares about me.

3. What is your favorite piece to play and why?
I love playing my recital pieces because I get to perform them for everyone. I love making beautiful music that I can share with others.

4. What challenges have you faced when learning music and how did you overcome it?
I think everything can be learned with practice. I just continue to try my best. However, it has been a bit of a challenge to reach the pedals on the piano while staying seated on the bench. I am just not tall enough yet. I will be patient and soon I will grow.

5. What is your goal with music?
I want to be a great musician.

Thank you Roland! I am happy to announce that due in part to my relationship with Piano Adventures, our new group music room has been sponsored by Piano Adventures and Roland. We received 6 brand new 88-key Roland digital pianos (FP-30) and are thrilled to begin using these in our new piano group and group makeup classes.

This month, we also reached a milestone of 250 students. Some of you remember taking lessons in my original 400 square foot piano studio just 5 years ago. I fondly refer to you as the "O.G.s" ("Old Guys") of Opus..you know who you are. I'd like to thank our students, parents, teachers, and community for supporting our school. We'll continue to try to be the best music education provider in the area.

Very truly yours,
Mrs. Theresa Cheng
